This is a question I get asked a lot by my clients. There are a few things to consider when making your decision.
Firstly in Ayurvedic medicine there is the concept of Apana. Apana is the fifth of the five airs of Ayurvedic philosophy; the life force that governs expulsion activity. This covers the elimination from the bowel and the reproductive system, as the uterus cleanses and renews itself every month. The action of this energy is a downward movement and should be unimpeded and allowed to flow.
The next thing to consider is what exactly is contained in the products that are available to us?. Most sanitary towels and tampons contain dioxins and chemical residue from the processes that create them.
There have been a couple of articles written recently that go in to great depth on this subject and are worth a read:
Dr Mercola writes Women Beware: Most Feminine Hygiene Products Contain Toxic Ingredients
Care2.com writes 8 Things Every Woman Needs to Know about Feminine Hygiene Products
What do I do? For the record I do not use tampons, and my choice of product is Natracare – reasons here. I am however considering switching to cloth pads, mainly to restore more connection and awareness to my ‘cycling’ self (in addition to health, enviromental and financial reasons).
As women we have an inbuilt cycle, an ebb and flow of energy and creativity and the abilty to renew and cleanse ourselves physically and energetically from the inside out. This information and connection has been lost through the ages, but is making a return slowly but surely and gives us a way to tap into immense personal power and unlived potential. YES! Following your cycle with awareness can do this, along with other benefits such as reducing challenging menstrual symptoms.
If you would like to know more about cycle awareness please get in touch, I offer one to one sessions or can cater for groups.
