Breathing and the pelvic floor

In a large majority of my one-to-one work with clients, I see restricted breathing patterns. In the Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy® we address the diaphragm and the pelvic floor function and how these two large muscles, that ‘book end’ the abdominal viscera relate to each other. Practicing diaphragmatic breathing has great benefits for your body such as stress reduction, better digestion, more oxygen in our blood as well as actively helping the pelvic floor muscles.

I came across this great little animation below from Burrell Education that illustrates the relationship between these muscles and how we breathe beautifully…

If the diaphragm and pelvic floor are working in harmony there is less tension in these muscles (pelvic floors tend towards being hypertonic or tense) allowing better functioning of the abdominal organs. Some simple breathing practices can in fact enhance your pelvic health! Why not give it a try, or ask your local yoga teacher to demonstrate and guide you.

Womb: receives biological postcards from the world outside with tales from the future

This is a really lovely article on prenatal psychology (author unknown) from Magazine 8 about ‘The Womb as a Classroom’. I particulary like the notion “the mother sends to her child “biological postcards from the world outside” with tales from the future.” This is well worth a read for personal reflection on our own story and also for the new ones we bring into the world.

Even before a person is born, they are equipped with crucial knowledge of the world. They have gained that knowledge through the mother, who serves as a medium “transmitting” via biochemical signals information from the outside world. Everything the mother eats and the emotions she experiences influence the child and long before it is born into this world, the baby is prepared for some situations. The latest research in prenatal psychology sheds light on the experience we gain during the nine months spent in our mother`s womb.

It also goes on to say,

The mother signals her unborn child about the challenges it is going to face in the environment it is to be born in. In that way she informs the child about its chances of survival and helps the baby to adapt in such a way as to improve those chances. In the words of science populariser Annie Murphy Paul, the mother sends to her child “biological postcards from the world outside” with tales from the future.

Uma Dinsmore Tuli – Yoga | Dublin | Autumn 2015

I’m delighted to share that Uma Dinsmore Tuli is back on our shores for more Shakti nourishing yoga this October and November 2015. In addition she will also be launching her new project in collaboration with Jack Harrison : The Celtic School of Yoga. The purpose of this School of Yoga is to re-establish a balance between East and West, between what we look for outside of ourselves and what we find when we come home.

Castor oil packs for healing

IxChelCastor oil is a remedy that has been used through the ages, and most notably brought to light for healing purposes by Edgar Cayce. It has some wonderful healing properties, and for those experiencing menstrual difficulty it can be very supportive on a number of levels. Ricinoleic acid is the main component of castor oil, it exerts anti-inflammatory effects and enhances immune function*. Applying a pack to the lower abdomen can be very effective in decongesting the pelvis. There are many ways to make an external castor oil pack, some can be very messy. I have tried to hone this to the least messy way! To make a pack you will need the following:

  • Rectangle of cotton wool (big enough to cover lower abdomen)
  • Good quality castor oil (I use the organic Pukka brand – found in most health food shops)
  • Cling film/food wrap/plastic bag
  • Old Pj’s
  • Hot water bottle
  • Time to rest

Take the cotton wool and apply a generous layer of castor oil. Apply the cotton wool oil side down to your bare skin on the lower abdomen. Cover the cotton wool with a layer of cling film or plastic bag (to protect clothes), then apply the hot water bottle over the plastic in order to heat up the oil to allow it to penetrate your skin. Relax and lie down for an hour or at least 30 mins. Do this 3-4 times a week. (Protect soft furnishings with towels when sitting.) You can re-use your pack by folding over the cotton wool and placing it in a bag in the fridge. When you are ready to use again simply add another layer of fresh oil on top and repeat steps above. You can re-use the pack 4 times and then discard and begin a new one.

Castor oil has a cleansing decongesting effect on the pelvis and reproductive organs and is a modality recommended with a course of Arvigo Maya Abdominal Therapy sessions.

DO NOT use a castor oil pack:

  • whilst you are menstruating (may make the flow heavier)
  • at ovulation and onwards in the 2nd half of the cycle (if trying to conceive)
  • if you are pregnant
  • if you have an IUD

If you have a skin sensitivity and a rash occurs (rare) simply wash off the oil with a solution of 1 tablespoon of baking soda to a cup of warm water.

FREE Kindle book on Hormone and Thyroid Health for Women

The female body blueprintI havn’t read this particular book myself, The Female Body Blueprint: A Guide to Understanding Hormones and Thyroid Health [Kindle Edition] but notice today that it is free to download on Kindle. Its a good opportunity to explore this area. Our endocrine system can be under a lot of pressure due to the way we live. Our food is genetically modified, the meat we eat is from animals that have been fed artificial hormones, even our household cleaning products and the creams we put on our skin have endocrine disruptors contained in them. Feels like the odds are stacked against us…..

Moving to ways of minimising this can be be such a nourishing way to take care of yourself, a first remedy. Supporting your local healthfood store for a start (shout out to the wonderful Hopsack in Rathmines!) where you can buy organic non modified vegetables, look for cleaning products without harsh chemicals and endocrine disruptors, and skin care that is paraben free.

All these efforts plus actively reducing stress can bring a systemic wellbeing, the foundation for a healthy body, mind, spirit and thriving life.

Mayan Healing in Image Magazine Feb 2015

It’s been a busy media week! First the Gwyneth Paltrow interest story and now a really lovely piece on the Maya Healing Traditions in Image Magazine Image Magazine Article Excerpt. Kate O’Brien writes: ‘Far Out – taking you off the beaten track with a few alternative treatments to reboot body and mind.’ 

She researches ‘some of the lesser known therapies sharing many commonalities, but most notably that they focus on mental and spiritual wellness as the foundation of enduring health’. Kate looks at the origins of these modalities, and gives a close to home option of where you can experience them in Ireland.

Gwyneth Paltrow and vaginas and steams, oh my!

I honestly never expected to be mentioned in the same newspaper article as Gwyneth Paltrow and vaginas…

What is this all about? Well, recently Gwyneth reported on her blog about Tikkun Spa in Santa Monica she had visited where she experienced a vaginal steam treatment (also known as Bajos, yoni steams or v-steams). The mainstream media picked up on this, probably for the sensationalist angle and evoked images of power hosing and industrial strength procedures. Lots of column inches ensued…

Bajo | Vaginal Steam | Yoni Steam | V SteamSince this was reported there has been much mis-information out there and many responses from ‘experts’ who did not understand what this very old and traditional therapeutic treatment is all about. (For the record – no power hosing or industrial procedures!)

I have written about Bajos or vaginal steams here before. They are an important part of the Arvigo practitioner toolkit that we advise clients to use for therapeutic use to help address certain types of menstrual pathology. Women who experience normal menstrual cycles can also benefit but the gold is to be found for those that experience difficulty with their cycles.

There are certain contraindications for use (not advised for IUD wearers, any pelvic inflammatory condition, suspected pregnancy or active infection present), and as part of Arvigo techniques of Maya abdominal therapy, you will be advised as to the correct use. We advocate a lot of self care strategies, such as our self care massage and the vaginal steams are one of these ancillary healing strategies offering much support.

My Arvigo colleagues around the globe have also replied and here is an excellent article that appeared in The Guardian in the UK by Katinka Locascio and also a response from Tami Kent on her Facebook page: Post by Wild Feminine.

I give my clients a kit to do this in the privacy of their own home. Some women are very excited at hearing about this treatment, and some clients look at me with a raised eyebrow and a collective response of “You want me to do what?”. Thankfully I can report that the latter group are won over after their first experience. It’s a soothing, warming, effective and very pleasant experience where you get to put yourself and your reproductive health to the top of the priority list.
